Blogging 101: Resize a Photo for Online Use

Today in our Blogging 101 series we are focusing on resizing a photo for your blog. When your website or blog starts to get popular, we all know that we want to try to keep people coming back for more. The last thing you want is to slow your site down just when it starts getting traffic – your problem could be the size of your photos.

Here’s a simple 8 step guide to resize a photo for the web:

1. Download image to your computer. 2. Go to http://pixlr.com, a great free online editor that we use at SocialNicole (add this site to your bookmarks!). 3.Click on “Open Pixlr editor (advanced).” Resize a Photo 4. Upload image from your computer. 5. Go to “image” and click on “image size.” Reduce the width of the pixel size to less than 600 (it will automatically constrain height based on your chosen width). Click “OK” when finished.

Resize a Photo 36. Go to “file” in the left hand corner of the webpage and go down to “save.”
7. Look at the lower right hand of the box where you’ll see “file quality.” Make sure this size is under 100KB (preferably closer to 50-60KB).   If necessary, reduce the quality in order to reduce the overall size of the file.Resize a Photo 4
8. Name the image and make sure the image is saved as a jpeg. Remember that the file name should be saved with an SEO keyword optimal name – this title will be available for everyone to see.
