iPad Love or Infatuation

Ipad useful for businessI “inherited” an iPad recently from my 13 year old daughter. Why would she “give” me her iPad especially when she saved her precious babysitting earnings last spring to purchase it? She loved this thing (i’m typing this post on it now). She took it everywhere, playing games on it, reading books on it and googling everything possible. I call her “google” for her nickname.

I watched envious of her, but could not justify a purchase of one. I already had a Macbook Pro, a 27″ desktop iMac and and an iPhone. Then In August I upgraded my iPhone 3 to an iPhone 4 and gave the old one to my daughter. And her affections swayed from the iPad to the iPhone. She has even typed a few papers at school on it at recess to avoid them being late. I didn’t realize how abandoned the iPad was until a few weeks ago when she told me she really doesn’t use it anymore now that she has the iPhone. She even prefers to read her books on the iPhone!

So I asked her if i could use her iPad as it would be sad for it to sit all alone. She “gave” it to me. So here I am trying to figure out what this thing is good for. I like being able to write blog posts in bed without dragging my laptop out. How lazy is that? I don’t like how slow it is when typing on the touchpad. It’s a drag. I’m not big on games. And for work this thing is a little slow. I have pre-ordered the new ClamCase which is coming out this month. It has a keyboard built in. From the rumors online hopes are this will be the solution many iPad fanatics have been waiting for. Will this make the touch more user friendly and a bit more like a net book? I’ll let you know.

So I’m interested to hear from you. Who out there wants an iPad? And for those of you who own one; Is it love or infatuation?

Hi Nicole, i was surprised to hear your daughter had already abandoned the iPad, i suppose the small size makes it more convenient for a teenage lifestyle or perhaps thats just an excuse and the reason for her abandonment goes deeper than that.

I blame apple, for two reasons:

First, they have disrupted the diffusions of innovations theory, I’ll explain.

I describe myself as an early adopter, someone who dives into new and exciting things without hesitation, with the optimistic attitude of a fool. This character trait has given me a resilience to disappointment that most do not possess. I mention this because the iPad, the first gadget of its kind, has pulled consumers who are normally part of the early majority and perhaps even the late majority, as defined by the diffusions of innovations theory, into the market much much sooner than they would normally have entered it. This early entry to the market, before the product has matured and gone through revisions and criticism has lead to disappointment. Small things like the apple iPad keyboard, not fitting the iPad while its in the apple iPad case leads to disappointments these customers aren’t accustomed to (I had to cut my case to make it fit).

The second reason Apple is to blame, and perhaps the more important one, is that they have over promised and under delivered. I’ll explain.

The iPad was introduced by Steve Jobs himself, as MAGIC. Although initially this marketing strategy lead to massive demand for the product, it has set an expectation in many consumers eyes that the iPad just simply can’t deliver on. You go to the store, excited and thrilled to hold this magical device in your hand, and when you get it home and the initial excitement of getting something new wears off, you realize the device is not Magic and disappointment sets in. The iPad is what you make of it. The App store is filled with thousands of apps that will make or break your experience with the device. I’ve installed a few hundred Apps on my iPad most of which i use for a few days then uninstall. This trial and error is necessary to really find the apps that meet your needs. I’ve looked through my apps and here is a list of apps I’ve been using on a daily basis for over 2 months:

auditorium – to discover indie music
twitter – to explore the twitter universe
Flipboard – Check in on Facebook and various tech, financial, design, and fashion blogs.
Jazz.fm91 – its my local Jazz station in Toronto
    iBooks – Read various books
    Safari – Surf the web
    TD – Online banking

thats about it. Yet in answer to your question, I LOVE !!!!!! my iPad. I have come to expect disappointment, I take the term “magic” with a grain of salt and I install apps on a daily basis, because I never know when I might find one thats useful.

    Hope this helps !

Thanks for the comment…I really appreciate your reasoning and can see some truth in it…I think when people who are not used to early adoption are lured to buy something with promises of magic it can lead to disappointment. I love your insight. I also love that you love your iPad…Hope I feel that way at some point. Right now it is a fun little toy to play with.

Regarding my daughter, I am thrilled for her turning to the iPhone, Lucky me! Whether it is because the iPhone is smaller and more conducive or a deeper reason I am not sure. I think she may eventually work her way back to the iPad, I am prepared for her to take ownership again…but we will see…She is 13 with an iPhone and desktop computer and may not feel the need to come back to the iPad…then again when she sees the new keyboard case perhaps things will change. Only time will tell.

I have heard of designers using it to showcase their work, I have even seen executives having Macbook pro along with an ipad in the office. To be honest it is tempting to get it as a new gadget, but for the life of me I cannot find a reason to use it for work. I was hoping I can design using photoshop on it but that is impossible. and To blog well I got the HTC desire and I can blog using my phone.

So if you do find a reason, please do share with me.
