Getting the 101 on Google Plus’s +1

With so many people using Google+, it seems like it should be easy to get people to add you to their circles and to get those followers to +1 your posts. Well, with many small businesses and entrepreneurs fighting for attention, getting engagement is sometimes easier said than done. However, with the right tips in mind, +1s will be coming your way in no time.

What’s a +1 on Google Plus?

First, let’s talk about what a +1 really is. It’s similar to a “like” on Facebook or a “favorite” on Twitter. It’s pretty much saying, “This is cool!” It makes sense people want more +1s on their content. Also, the more +1s you get, the higher your search ranking is. A search ranking is where on the list your content appears in the results of a search engine. Another way of saying this is saying your SEO improves with more engagement on Google+. Content does best when it is personable, engaging and thriving with new information. Below are some tips on how to use Google+ to enhance your SEO and noticeability!

1. Put images with your posts.

Make your post stand out with a photo or illustration that relates to what you are telling your followers. If you post a picture with bright, eye-catching colors, even better!

2. Ask your followers to engage with your post.

Have them create a caption for a photo or ask them a question. Give them a reason to talk to you. Anything that will make your followers feel involved is a great way to get +1s and views.

3. Have consistency.

Do some particular hashtags on certain days of the week. For example, #tbt (throwback Thursday), but make it personal. Come up with your own hashtags! Think about the conversations your audience is having–what kinds of hashtags would make sense for your persona?

4. Keep engaging others.

If you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours. Followers will not continue to be involved with your posts if they feel like they’re talking to a wall. Make sure you reply to comments and +1 their posts. This is perhaps the most important part of staying active on Google+ and other social media channels.

5. Use enthusiasm!

If you don’t sound excited, why should your followers want to be involved with the content? You must be enthusiastic about your posts! If you’re not proud of or happy with the content you’re sharing, you can get assistance here.

6. Post often.

While quality over quantity is more important, posting often is an important way to keep your supporters engaged. Use the posting ideas from above to create some memorable posts, daily. Your followers won’t be able to get enough of your Google+ profile and they’ll +1 your great posts! Use the steps above and make sure your personality is in your posts as well. It might seem like a lot of work keeping up with social media accounts, but it’s also fun, and so worth it. Engagement is necessary in keeping the “social” in “social media.” If you have questions or want more information about Google+, contact me or comment below! – Photo Credit
